Abaya literally means ‘Cloak’, It is an Arabic name for the traditional loose robe-like dress or over garment worn by women, mostly in the Muslim communities.
However, The Traditional Abaya are mostly black and may be either a large square of fabric wrapped from the shoulders, head or a long kaftan. The Abaya covers the whole body except the head, feet, and hands. It can be worn with the niqāb(also called a ruband a garment that covers the face). Some women also wear long black gloves, so their hands are covered as well.
These Abaya can be worn on different occasion such as Mosque visit and Islamic Celebration. But it is believed that this robe-like garment has existed for more than 4,000 years. Historical evidence points towards its been used by ancient civilizations, especially the Mesopotamians who wore clothing that was long and as loose as the Abaya of today.
